Abstract

Introduction: With the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, mourning rituals needed to be significantly modified due to health guidelines, resulting in limitations and restrictions. Objectives: It is with the intention of delving into this topic that this study aims to explore the theme of mourning rituals under the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, it intends to discuss the process of death and dying affected by the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, analyze the scientific production related to this topic at the beginning of the pandemic, as well as present how people experienced mourning rituals for those who died from Covid-19. Method: In order to achieve these objectives, a literature review, a systematic review, and an empirical study were conducted, organized into three chapters in the following sequence. Results: The literature review concludes that death, which is typically a taboo subject, has been brought to the forefront by Covid-19, despite the resistance of the global population, but it has also allowed for a direct confrontation with it and the proposal of new ways to face it. The systematic review discussed how the topic of mourning rituals under the influence of Covid-19 was being studied worldwide. Studies were analyzed that, primarily through theoretical analysis, predicted negative repercussions regarding mourning for Covid-19 deaths, as well as emphasized the importance of alternative forms of mourning rituals in the given circumstances. Finally, the empirical study presented the experience of the family members, noting that there was a minimal establishment of mourning ritual processes among the research participants, albeit not in the traditional manner. However, the impact of the changes had a painful effect due to the complexity and disorganization to which the entire process was subjected. It is understood from this that the experience of mourning rituals for Covid-19 is a more challenging and, at the same time, confusing ritual, but it is still considered a mourning ritual. Conclusion: Therefore, the modifications to the entire funeral process influenced the emotional and mourning aspects for those who experienced them. The interdiction and deprivation of possibilities, choices, and alternatives were significant in this experience and had a strong impact on how everything was perceived and experienced.
